Quite a performance

This is one heck of a talented guy. My friend sent some music to me, and this was one of them. He must know my style of music because this is perfect. I would love to just sit back and listen to this man sing to me all day long..

Sunday to Monday

It's been a great weekend.

Sometimes after a weekend, I start to feel kind of depressed or anxious about the coming week. This is usually because I'm not as prepared as I should be. In reality, I need to just plan as much as I can, learn as much as I can, and the day is not hard to get through; weekdays can actually be quite enjoyable.

For the past few hours, I've been working on getting organized for school. I now have a notebook labeled with all of the assignments I've done in the past for 11th grade, read to go. As I finished it up, I realized, though, that I only have material for half of the semester. I forgot that when I was student teaching, it was for a 45 minute year-long class, which means after slave narratives, I have no idea what I'm doing. This started to bring me down. However, I need to remember how lucky I am to have the amount of information I do to get me through at least half of the semester! I would feel less stressed about it, but I keep thinking of SOLs in the back of my mind.

For 12th grade, I am beginning new. I have never worked with 12th grade material, but luckily there's no SOL, and the kids are pretty fun and laid back. The problem is just wrapping my head around everything I have to teach that I haven't read since high school, and getting everything in I can. I can't say it's not extremely overwhelming. I guess this is the life of many with new jobs.

In other news, J and I are considering moving closer to home once we're married, and it's a large possibility. As I've said before, I like my job and the fact that I have a few close friends nearby, but I am more than ready to move on with my life and move to the place I am happiest.

Off to read and make slot-notes for class....

One of the best nights of my life.

There have been a number of days and summers and years that I can say are some of the best in my life. Last night was on of the funniest, best nights of my life. Looking back, I wonder if I can really tell the story on here and have it make sense, or even explain what happened with the detail to really put you there. Since I'm not sure of that, I'll just give you a run down:

1. Eating dinner with J, L, G
2. Discussing future bachelorette party and festivities, include the idea of a towering phallus
3. Discussion leads to shake weight video and shake weight abilities
4. Demonstration of one's abilities at the dinner table....
5. Leaving because we are done and we figure we'll soon be kicked out.
6. Get to the door, pay for the food.
7. Turn.
8. Turn to see a 50-60 year old man wearing a motorcycle t-shirt, a black leather jacket, and a mustache looking at me, holding a cake with two large breasts on top.
9. Grabbing J's arm to look.
10. Laurie comes out of bathroom, Ginny turns; we all smile and glare at the cake and the man.
11. "It's my birthday," he says happily.
12. We all begin to laugh hysterically, grabbing our cameras, taking pictures; he has become a celebrity. Laurie comments on how his cake and "what we have been talking about" goes so well together (of course, this adds mystery to our dinner discussion)
13. The man says, "You should see what the rest of the cake looked like!" (it was half eaten)
14. Justin then proceeds to say, "Well, we see what half you chose to eat first!" (big smile)
15. We all, including the older women and men in their group, begin to laugh hysterically, filling the entire restaurant (all while the man proudly holds his cake). Justin gets a double high five from one of the men, the others comment and give man-roars.

Let's just say, it was one of the best moments of my life so far. It happened at the perfect timing with the perfect awkwardness, and the perfect comments with the perfect audience. It was a little raunchy, but that adds to why it's so funny. It made me happy knowing the older people were probably brought back to their college years, just by looking at us, and that we saw ourselves together in thirty years as them, holding a breast cake and celebrating a birthday. I couldn't stop laughing, and I was falling over; that's what told me it was one of the best moments ever.

Hope you had a wonderful Friday, too. I had the day off, so that made it even better!

Type to Talk

This posting is simply to get my brain awake and scare the nerves away. We have a two-hour delay today, and teachers report one hour late. That alone is going to make my day that much easier. I will have classes for an hour each. That should give me time to give my syllabus, read through it, do attendance, ask about textbooks, and have them do a short writing assignment. However, I still lost some sleep thinking about today, simply because it's new and I'm not completely prepared.

After school, I'm planning on making any necessary copies I need to before I leave. Then I'm going to come home and relax. After that, I will make sure I'm prepared for Friday. I will then go to sleep early!

Le sigh, this post is terribly boring, and there's no need for people to read it. Writing soothes me and makes me stop to think for a minute, so it's the perfect remedy to a not-so-upbeat morning.

The other remedy is to walk my dog to pet her once we get inside. She's the most lovable dog. I'll update you when I'm home about how my day went.

iPhone

Usually I'm the last one to hop on the bandwagon of seemingly stupid things (GPS, cell phones, shoes, ipod, etc). I simply deem them to be worthless and just more items to make society stupid, but in reality, some of these things are pretty darn cool!!

For instance, I used to say that GPS systems were terrible because people would become stupid and lazy and never know how to follow directions anymore. The truth is, they probably do cause a lot of issues with people that get distracted by them or people that cannot multitask. I'm fairly good at listening and driving, so having one works very well for me. I can get told how to get to the nearest coffee house in a big city or how to get back on the highway after a crazy airport drive. Overall, the $60 for my GPS was worth it. However, I was still very late in buying one.

The same goes for the iPhone. I always secretly liked them, but I didn't want to admit to liking a phone that charged extra just for data! AND they had a minimum you HAD to buy! (How unfair and snobbish of them!) However, the old iPhone has now gone down a huge amount in price, and I happened to have an upgrade and a crappy phone needing to be replaced. I went for the iPhone, and let me tell you what... it is surprisingly amazing!! I was like a little girl with a new long-haired barbie, or a little boy with a new nerf gun; I was gasping joyously at every new thing the guy showed me this phone could do. Amazing. I gotta give it to you technology; you're freakin' sweet.

Now that I feel upgraded and super excited, I'm going to bed.

Wish me luck on my first-day-as-a-real-teacher-and-new-semester-and-syllabus-etc day :)

Grumps

I can't help but be a little annoyed that I got out early from work for snow, didn't have the copier to finish organizing for my first day of the second semester, and we have not a bit of snow on the ground. The sun is coming through the clouds as I type.

Yesterday I looked at the map, and proclaimed that it wasn't going to do anything-the system looked like it was headed away from us instead of directly into us. Sure enough, that's what happened. Unfortunately, this morning when it started sleeting, we all (including me, yes) figured it was the beginning of the 4-8 inches of snow we were supposed to get. I have to admit to getting my hopes up.

I also get grumpy when I feel overwhelmed. It is going to hit hard that I'm beginning a new semester, and I have to learn all new names and start over. It's a great thing because I don't have to stay with the same classes all year, but it's hard because I have to learn about each of these classes. All classes have a personality and potential. As far as 11th grade, I know what I'm doing for most of the semester, but I don't have beginning materials ready. I have a few 12 grade materials ready, but I don't know anything about the literature for the first few days. It's a weird mixture of confusion and stress.

Anyway, I'm going to change this mood I'm in. I'm going to take a therapeutic shower, take the dog on an oxygen-filled walk, and organize my plans for school.

By the way, I got the Jeep back today. The re-built transmission is working great! Let's hope nothing else goes wrong in that thing, or I might have to pay monthly on a (lot) new (er) car.

Happy Hump Day.

Lounging

I'm lounging at the local coffee house, indulging in a peppermint mocha and pastry. I adore the music they play in these places, so of course I'm humming along. This is the perfect place to do some relaxing, planning, and thinking. I'm the typical coffee house chick with messy hair and no bra. Ah, this is the life.
The inner-hippie feels good.

New Rug (it's so me)

Not the best picture, but you get the idea :)

There's nothing like...

a hot shower right when you walk in the door from work.

I'm telling you--on some days where your feet stink from sweating in nasty teacher-like dress shoes and you feel yourself covered in paper dust and hole-punch scraps, it is time for that shower.

By the way, yesterday I had my avocado and tomato dinner again. I ate out a couple of times this weekend--at least one to excess--but still not terrible. I did eat fast-food for lunch today because all of the teachers went out. I didn't want to stay at school by myself! (Ok, I will tomorrow.. promise) So far tonight I've had 1/3 bowl of chicken corn chowder, and I'm already full.

I can't wait to just sit back, relax, and turn on the t.v. while I grade. It sounds boring, but knowing that I only have one class tomorrow, then a work day, I'm feeling pretty calm. I do have to write my syllabus, though. Ack.

Off to leave my ring at the place it gets appraised (something that has been on my to-do list for a while)...

Happy Monday!

The Week Ahead

Monday: Blocks 1 & 2 final exams/planning and grading

Tuesday: Blocks 3 & 4 final exams/planning and grading

Wednesday: work day for teachers (no students, planning, planning, planning, being nervous)

Thursday: 1st day of Spring semester (achhdaksdjfhhh) (must have syllabus ready, must present well, etc)

Friday: TGIF (2nd day of Spring semester)

Saturday: Bridal show with L???

From this point on, I will have a whirlwind of emotion, learning, teaching, and more--all the way until the week of my wedding. The summer will feel sooo good.
Yesterday Laurie and I went to see "No Strings Attached" which we loved!

We were going to go see the 7:40 pm showing. There was a long line, so Laurie left to grab some popcorn and a soda. As she did this, I was told the movie was sold out.

We decided to get tickets for the 10:30 pm showing, but now we had a huge thing of popcorn and a huge drink. What were we to do?

We came up with the decision to put our treasured snacks into the car while we shopped around.

We then brought them back into the theater when we returned for the showing.

I couldn't stop laughing. Let's just say I'm glad I didn't see any of my students or their parents!! They would have assumed I was nuts. :)

Friday, January 21, 2011

It shows I have a schedule when I'm about to go to bed at 9:30 on a Friday night. Haha. Today was the last day of the semester--we have finals on Monday and Tuesday. It was kind of a crazy day (I won't go into detail), but I made it through. The kids seemed to wish they could stay in my class, and many asked if I would miss them (uh, yeah).

I've found out my schedule for next semester, and it's all 11th and 12th grade. Wowza. Seniors are known for being lazy yet laid back for the most part--however, they can bring the smart talk. I don't know the material because I haven't worked with it before. 11th grade is whatever--I've worked with them before, so I know most of their curriculum.

Luckily, I have at least 4 faces that are familiar from when I was student teaching. Thing is, they've only seen me as my most laid back student teacher phase--I was never in charge of their classes (they were in the teacher cadet class). I'm going to have to try to be as fun as possible but also laid back.

It made me feel good today when one of the seniors who just found out he has me called out in the hallway "Ohh Ms. H English next semesttaaaaaaaa" with his hand raised in some teenage fashion. He was smiling really big, too. Haha. I guess I have a pretty decent reputation among the school.

Another kid from my drama class is going to be a repeat. He's a funny, funny guy, and I've really liked having him in class. He asked, "so, who's going to make whose life hell first?" Nice. Turns out English is his worst subject.

Happy Friday, everyone.

ps. I can't wait until it gets warm again! I feel like I don't have enough pictures anymore. My hands get too cold.

(for my future reference)

Names I like (that I would like to use for future children--a long way off, of course--but always fun to think about it), and more will be added later:
Fionna, Skye, Jem, Ivy, Luna, Drea, Lyra, Sophia, Jade, Jaci, Joelle,
Josie, Zoe, Zack, James, Chloe, Ella, Ellie, Jake, Erik, Mark, Emma

Might I add that I am very thankful I do not yet have children!

I AM EMPLOYED

I have successfully landed the English position at the local high school.
As of today, I am the new English teacher for grades 11 and 12.
Never did I think I'd actually get lucky enough to get a job for Spring semester.
I thought I was going to have to work in the
grocery store or retail store or substitute.
This means tons of work ahead.
--but I get paid,
and I have more pride to say that
I'm a teacher now.

Wish me luck!!!!

I'm not sure what I did yesterday....(don't look Laurie)

but this morning when I woke up, my toes all felt very ... old. It brought me back to a few years ago when I decided to go through with hammer toe and bunion surgery. I had my first surgery in May, and my second surgery that next January. I gained a lot of weight from sitting all the time, and I gained a bit of age on my feet. They feel much better, and it was totally worth it, but they do still cause me problems. For instance, my feet used to be numb every morning when I woke up, and now they go numb randomly--usually when I'm sitting in a position for a while or when I wear heels too long. My toes used to hurt, get achy, and go numb when I exercised. They still get numb when I exercise, but not as badly, and from what I've read that's fairly normal.

This morning I made the comment, "oh my goshhh my feet feel like I've been through surgery again." J couldn't help but say that I must not remember how much pain I went through. He's right. Surgery must be like childbirth--how one can just forget and move on--do it again. I look back and remember how uncomfortable I was for so long and how much pain I went through. Getting the pins out was the worst.

Look away OR examine these odd pictures of my past. I still want to cringe when I look at them.

Today went better than yesterday, but it's still not worth discussing.

For dinner tonight, I had (too much) leftover veggie lasagna, some special bread I bought at a beautiful all-natural food store the other day, grape juice, and chocolate milk. I'm weird with beverages.. I always seem to have two. For lunch, I had my tuna packet with crackers and an apple sauce.

I find that I am very satisfied with my food and hunger level. My biggest problem, I'd say, is portion control. Instead of eating an entire serving of the lasagna--enough to make me feel full--I'll try to cut back a little and maybe add a veggie or fruit.

Off to hold myself back from napping and get papers graded, lessons planned, and grades entered.

Creative Needs

I'm getting bored with my food. I'll go as far as to say I'm bored with all the crappy, unhealthy food I've been eating, if you can believe that. I've made a trip to the grocery store, and after filling the cart with food, I'm ready to start trying to bring creativity with food into my life. I also want to eat healthier and add exercise into the mix. The place is here that I will talk/rant/list/rejoice about these things -- on top of everything else (and there's enough today that I'm not even going to go there--I'm so glad this work day is over!)

Tonight I had:

noodles with olive oil, tomatoes, avocado
grape juice, water
small bowl of dark chocolate chips for dessert

It was really good! I will have to cut the serving size a bit if I really want to see a difference. Basically, I lost a good 10-15 pounds through Spring/Summer last year, and I plan to start early this year--and really make it a lifestyle (let's hope). I'm happy with how I look for the most part, but I really miss the days of running around and being more active. I am always happier when I'm more active, and I feel so much better about myself and my life overall. I've always known my family members' natural therapy is to be outdoors. I just need to make it more of a habit, even if it means to be outside in the very cold weather for more than five minutes. I'm excited to work with my friend Laurie as we will cook together, get creative ideas (yes?), try new recipes, try some fresh veggie recipes, etc. When it gets warm, hopefully we'll be running outside again. I'm going to try to run before it gets warm...

Let's uplift each other in this long process of regaining the lifestyle and body needed! :)

Goals for the Week

1. Buy stamps and send the rest of the save-the-dates

2. Pick up Jeep/pay for Jeep

3. Lesson plans for new job (tentative)

4. Order bridesmaid gifts (etsy.com as always)

5. TENT

6. Ring appraisal (we've put this off far too long)

7. FLOWERS

8. TUX RENTAL

9. Loan deferments (call, request, send proof I've been in school, etc)

10. Sign up for job fair

11. Organize student loan amounts and loaners

12. Get creative with dinners this week. Post pictures to blog.

Jeeeeeeeep

Leaving my Jeep at the transmission shop is not a good feeling, considering I know the outcome.

Sure enough, we can pay to take the thing apart, replace the "soft parts," and put it back together. IF this doesn't help, we're looking at dropping that cost and doubling it, so that they can replace the "hard parts" needed.

Oh the joys of becoming an adult! I do not regret it--I've learned a lot--and I LOVE my Jeep. If we can get it fixed, I will love it even more (OMG it might shift into gear!). However, it's a bit overwhelming to pay more into it when we're trying to budget for so much more this year. It's still going to be much less than me paying monthly for a new car for five years or paying a large amount out-of-pocket for another used car. It'll work out, and in another few years, it will be worth it. Eventually, I might consider a newer car. This would be once I have a full-time job secured for long-term. Until then, this little Jeep adventure can keep on going. Let's just hope it's done surprising us after this fix.

As I watch J apply for jobs online, I begin to think about the future.

The idea of moving back "home" next year is wonderful.

I love this place because of the people and the simple memories of college life. However, I despise the poorly-made traffic designs, the lack of good shopping, the wind, and the apartment living.

"Home" (I say this because I have two homes now... where my parents live and also where my little family lives now) is not the perfect place--it's small, there's nothing to do within at least thirty minutes of driving, I'm going to know everyone I see from high school, etc. However, it's absolutely beautiful, the school systems are where I want to teach, I'll be close to family, and there are houses to buy with our savings (as long as I get this job).

Basically, I'm just excited that my friends are moving or are going to be fairly close to home next year, and I'm hopeful to find a job. That's what's getting me through this insanely cold winter!!! Oh, and the snow days :)

My Morning

J had to take a test for teaching today, so I got up at 5:30 am to accompany him out of town to the testing center. He took the test for four hours, and I drove around for a while until Phil came to hang out. During that hour I followed the GPS all over the place -- twice, in fact, to a non-existent Starbucks. It must have been in one of the buildings near by, but it was not visible. I was thoroughly exhausted by 8:15 am (dropped J off at 7:30) when I still had no coffee, and I was making myself car sick with all the turning around I was doing. Finally I ended up downtown where I had a moment of bliss -- the huge buildings with no people around -- very beautiful. I finally found a Starbucks and was able to venture to Phil's house.

We drove to a wonderful natural food store, which had everything under the sun. You could get your fresh flowers, fresh seafood, hand-made cheeses and breads, pastries, and coffees from all countries, all in this one store. And it was directly across from the Starbucks I had just visited--if only I had known! I brought home a bread soaked in a garlic topping. Beautiful. We then walked around in various places, but for the most part, we sat in the car talking over breakfast (our homemade pastry breakfast). It was a great time. We go to phil each other in (har har) on so much. I never get just Phil and me time--there's always another person. For that, it was worth getting up at 5:30. Other than that, it was not!! :) Let's just say I just woke up from a 2 hour nap!

Hopefully going out tonight--have fun whatever you do!

Budget

I've never, ever been one to have a budget, look at a budget, know what a budget is... what ?? Yeah, never. Luckily, I'm marrying one of the smartest people to walk the earth, and he is a mathematical guru and a budget super-hero. He spent almost all day creating a budget for us, and I couldn't be more excited. I know, I'm a loser. However, excitement is here because I never know my budget, and now I will! It's something I've wanted for years, but I just never knew how or what to do. I also had no reason to save money for anything besides clothes and cute shoes (omg!). I have big things to save for now (we won't mention the Jeep getting dropped off today at the transmission mechanics now will we?), but also small things (I need my coffee!), but all in all, I'm ready to have a set amount for each month. It'll keep me on my toes. Plus, it'll prepare us for the rest of our lives. We'll be livin' large with love, care, respect, memories, etc........on a teacher's salary. : )

Have a great Friday night!

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Almost Friday!

Thursday evenings are always slightly less stressful than most other evenings. I know that I am practically done with the school week, and as long as I have an idea for class the next day, I'm good to go. Tonight J made gingerbread cookies (blek!! I tried one, and somehow got the whole thing down.. I was impressed), and L and I played some Yahtzee (are you surprised?) and Worms. Overall, it was a good night.

A fight almost started in my class today! I thought I was going to get punched, but I went ahead and stepped between them anyway. Who knows what the problem was or is, but two guys were about to slam into each other. I took one student into the hall and told him to go "cool off, breathe" for a few minutes. The other one stayed in my classroom. See, this week is SOL week, so when I called down for support, they were all in the classrooms helping with tests. Sure enough, after my class there was a huge pile up of students in the hall. Guess what? The guys had waited until after class to fight. What a day.

Other than that, things have been okay this week--probably because we had 2.5 snow days.

Projected schedule:

Friday: TGIF
Saturday/Sunday: Weekendy things
Monday: Off for Martin Luther King day
Tuesday-Friday: work week
Saturday/Sunday: Weekendy things
Monday: Final Exams
Tuesday: Final Exams
Wednesday: Teacher work day (for new semester)
Thursday: First day of new job....?????? We'll see.

Off to bed! Zzzz

What do you think of this new blog "look"? The shabby designs told me I had to change what I had for some reason, and as I was changing, I found this neat template. Not sure if I'm sold...

Gingerbread Houses

.....can you tell which are mine and which are Laurie's? Her's are lovely domesticated homes, while mine is more like a jail. Let's just say that I've never been good at wrapping Christmas presents or anything else like it.

It was the perfect activity for a snow day.

Sunday, January 9, 2011

My weekend was great. Friday was a perfect night of relaxation and comfort. On Saturday, we made some origami, took a drive with coffee in hand, and took some pictures. After that, we got an invitation to go to the Japanese steakhouse for dinner-- yum yum. Good times with great friends.I'll post the pictures I took soon.

Unfortunately, I'm struggling with lack of motivation today. This is SOL week, so I have to keep the kids as unstressed as possible, but I also need to continue with curriculum. I have 2.5 weeks left in the semester. As I've said before, since I took over for a strange situation, it's been hard because the kids have been used to either no work or substitutes or movies.

The hardest part about this job so far is the grading--and frankly, it's overwhelming. I assign things for them to do.... one-act plays, stories, radio shows, commercials, speeches (yes, all of these things for different classes), but then I have to grade them! That's a silly complaint from a teacher, but since the kids aren't really used to grades (and neither are the parents), it's very hard for me to actually evaluate them. I don't have time to go into full detail with a long unit on research papers, yet I have to get them to write a (very short) one. How can I analyze and grade them? It doesn't seem fair to me. As far as drama, I feel the same way. They wrote plays, they performed them. As far as I'm concerned, that's 100% better than what they were doing, so they should get an A. However, should I be harder? Drama is an elective... and I remember in high school when I was in band and chorus, we just got As as long as we participated. Is that how Drama works? Ah, the life of the first-time teacher.

I still haven't found out if I got the English position for the rest of the year. If I do get it, I'll have to spend my free time making my syllabus, figure out classroom management rules and tactics, etc. That's a lot to do in just a matter of a couple of weeks. STRESS.

As far as the rest of the day,
I'm going to TRY
to get rid of this awful
feeling of stress
and take
a few
deep
breaths.

Engagement Story July 22, 2010

I think it's safe to say that it is well past the time I should have told you all my engagement story :)

First, I need to say that I had absolutely no idea. I was completely shocked. I never thought this would happen. I am the type of girl to unwrap Christmas presents early only to slyly cover them again; the girl that likes to know what's going on; the girl that can get anything out of my other half. But it really happened, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Looking back, I can't believe I ever wanted to know when it would happen and/or shop for a ring together.

The night began when we got a call from a group of friends/old roommates to hang out downtown for one of their last nights before moving and beginning the "real world." It was a last minute idea, and I had no clean laundry, so I threw on a black dress I found in the closet. Looking back, this is really odd because I usually don't wear dresses out. I also wore red shoes, and my hair didn't look too bad either (another rarity). What's hilarious about the dress is that in the pictures we took, it looks fine. In reality, it was horribly wrinkled and battered (from being in the closet for a longgg time without being worn), but I made sure to ask J if it would show up in the dark bar, and he assured me it would not. Off we went!

After only a few minutes at the bar (since we arrived pretty late), our friends were headed home to hang out. They were bored, I guess. As we were leaving, I asked J if he wanted to just... take a walk. It was a beautiful summer night, and I wasn't ready to go home yet. Our friends were clueless, by the way. No one knew except J and his best friend, Phil (more on that story soon). J agreed, since he was already planning on asking me to take a walk (the ring was in his pocket), so we walked on.

As we took a stroll together, the summer spirit took over us, and we took a variety of silly pictures. I probably was feeling rather fun because I was in a dress, and he was probably going along with anything since he was growing more and more nervous (you can tell from the pictures hehe).

We ended up at an overlook where we sat on a stone wall and stared into the openness of the field. We took more pictures (which is very nostalgic because we started our relationship with picture taking), and after I was throwing my hair around for a picture he was having me move and pose for, I opened my eyes to see him kneeling in front of me, ring in hand.

He asked just the right words: "Will you marry me?" in the midst of my "oh..my..god..oh..my..goooddddd," and of course, I said "Yes." I was so shocked!! I didn't expect it for at least another six months or so. Who knew he was planning for a 2011 wedding ;)

The ring was and is absolutely perfect. I've never seen anyone with it, and it's my favorite style. I definitely showed him the style a while back because I'm... a little picky with rings... especially one I will wear for the rest of my life! I never really thought I'd have the "dream ring" one day, though. He really made sure to make me feel special.

Did I mention the moon was out? What a perfect night.

Nostrils! It's artsy, right? .....

Our silly shot of the night.

---The Aftermath---

I was so shocked, I barely sent texts and called my friends and family. I rushed over to my friend Laurie's house to show her the ring. She couldn't believe how perfect it was for me, and how it was all she had heard me wanting in a ring for the past two years. I called my mom after Laurie demanded me to (I was honestly so shocked and excited, I could barely think straight). I also called Dana (it was pretty darn late), but she called back and I told her the great news! I sent texts to others that I figured were in bed at that point.. I think it was about midnight. Everyone was so thankful and happy for the event. What's hilarious about the whole thing is that it was Dana's birthday. Justin and I called her that morning in the car on speaker phone and left her a very obnoxious, silly birthday song. Who knew I'd be engaged that night!!

Once J and I got through the excitement together and he showed me the specs on the ring (he was pretty excited about them), we got to sit down and talk about how the hell he planned it all without me knowing.

Turns out, about two weeks before, I went home for a few days. He was shopping for the perfect ring at that time. He had the ring sent to his friend Phil's house, so that I wouldn't know. Earlier in the week of the engagement, Phil came into town to have lunch with Justin. J didn't invite me or mention it much, but I pretty much demanded to go with him because I mean... it was PHIL and I NEVER get to see him! I went to lunch with the guys for some great burgers, and everything was very ordinary and fun. Little did I know, when I just happened to tell them I wanted to grab some coffee, so I left a little early, they quickly exchanged the ring and placed it in J's trunk. Yes, the trunk. If I had known!! (I definitely went through the trunk that week, and J freaked for a minute at one point--me oblivious, of course. Wow, I'm glad I didn't find it).

Basically, the whole thing worked out wonderfully. Everything I did only aided Justin in his plan for proposing, which is great for a story, and he did a beautiful job planning it out and surprising me.

Now I can't stop thinking about June. :)

A good morning?

Yes. Can you believe it? Most mornings I wake up only to turn into J's arms and dream about staying home all day. Alarm rings. I sit in misery. Alarm rings again. I make miserable faces in the dark. Basically, I just feel really, really sorry for myself. As you may have gathered, I am not a morning person. Everything about the teaching profession fights against my wants (and needs), but somehow I get to work on time each day. Amazing.

I write this to tell you the positive news of having a good morning--no complaining, no faces, no grunts. I woke up after a dream about exploring a beach. I felt relaxed, happy, and positive. I turned to J to tell him how good I felt, even though I wasn't sure why.

So, tonight, I'm getting in bed as soon as I stop typing. I'm closing my eyes and enjoying the cool sheets. I'm hoping for another positive morning.

The sweetest thing...

 those days of summer,
dancing in that tank top
singing at the top of my lungs.
moments I leaned and sat
Sharpe ringing in my ears
sweat running,
running right down my back.

And We Begin The New Year

I forgot to mention yesterday: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PHIL!!! Phil is a great friend of mine, but I don't get to see him as often as I would want. He had his annual party on New Years Eve, but unfortunately, we couldn't make it. I hear it was great, though!

In other news:

Already I am reminded of the many things I need to do this year, this month, this day, this hour. Luckily, I have been successful in getting some of it done already...

Put away Christmas decorations: CHECK
4 loads of laundry: CHECK
Begin cleaning room: CHECK

As far as what needs to get done:

Finish cleaning room.
Drama plans for the next 3.5 weeks (I've been putting this off)
English 9 plans for the next 3.5 weeks (Ditto)
Grade reading quizzes (Ditto)
Grade short stories (Ditto)
Get ring appraised.
Child Abuse "class" online

Ack! There is so much to get done, and I sit on the couch. I have one day left before I head back to work, so I've got to get at least the school-related items done. Why do I put it off? Not sure. One day I'll learn. If I can at least get the next week planned, I'll feel good. Thing is, if I'm offered the English position for the remainder of the year, I'll need to start planning for that. Wouldn't that be crazy? First-time teacher, first-time job, beginning in the middle of the year. Wow.

Anyhow, the reason I didn't get more done today is because I had a great day doing other things. I began by finishing the Modern Family season 1 DVDs I got from J for Christmas. I LOVE that show. I could watch the whole season again..right now..and I don't say that about many shows or movies. J and I then went to town to walk into B&N to use my gift card (found two books: Little Bee and Steinbeck's King Arthur novel I've been wanting for a while). I tried to find crafts at Michaels to try things out for the wedding, but they didn't have much of a selection. J and I then stopped for dinner at a restaurant that we got a gift card for (theme, anyone?) and had a great time. We got a booth upstairs and got to spend some quality time together. J actually didn't want to leave, but I made him get up.

Now I head back to my family, my pets, and my chores. The days are getting longer already, and I'm desperately reaching for Spring air. I can't wait.

Enjoy January :)

PS: Did I tell you my aunt is singing when I walk down the aisle? She used to sing in theater in NYC, and she's amazing. We thought of singing something together, but any pressure taken off me is probably best. I'll keep the song a secret until later...

Great little write up about learning each year.

Happy 2011, Everyone!

Great song that'll make ya dance. :)
